NATIONAL TRAIN DAY - Saturday May 11, 2013 - 10am to 2pm

Trains matter. It's part of a National Celebration of America's Railways and Train Services, from freight trains to terminal railroads to passenger trains of all types.
It marks the anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike in 1869 to complete the first Transcontinental Railroad.

We had a great time hosting National Train Day at the Fort Worth Intermodal Transportation Center!
Special events included track-side operating railroad equipment like locomotives and passenger cars that everyone could see up close. 
Entertainment for all ages.
Kids will loved the Chuggington play area!

The special promotion connects families to all the great Saturday destinations served by the Trinity Railway Express, DART, DCTA and The T.
It continues each Saturday through August 17 and that includes National Train Day on Saturday May 11.  Customers who have monthly or annual
Regional Passes can take advantage of the Saturday savings as well, making those passes an even better value.

We kicked off the celebration at 10:00 am.
There were remarks about WHY TRAINS MATTER from The Fort Worth T, Amtrak, City of Fort Worth, GE Transportation and the TxDOT Rail Division.

  • AMTRAK had one of their national network passenger cars open to the public.
  • TEX Rail representatives were there to show how it will take you from Fort Worth to DFW Airport in the future.
  • Fresh off the assembly line from the new GE Fort Worth-Alliance Locomotive Plant, the newest BNSF Railway locomotive was there!
  • There was a raffle to win two Amtrak round-trip coach tickets and a custom made Walthers Model Train Layout.
  • Union Pacific was there to show how they help keep the air we breathe cleaner in North Texas - they also had their GenSet locomotive parked at at the station platform.
  • Staff from the Union Pacific Railroad safety department was there.
  • Trinity Railway Express had an open house with one of their locomotives and a passenger car available to see.
  • Interurban Car #25, as always, was at the ITC, celebrating it's 100 year anniversary.
  • The TxDOT Texas-Oklahoma Passenger Rail Study is underway. Representatives from TxDOT were there to show what it could mean for faster trains in the future.
  • The Chuggington play area was inside the ITC waiting area, just for kids. Lots of freebees for kids that love trains.
  • Watch the daily Heartland Flyer and Texas Eagle passenger trains arrive and depart between 12:30 and 2pm
  • See TWO working model railroad displays and talk with the railroad modelers -
  • Lone Star Hi-Railers Model Railroad Club and North Texas T-Trak Modular Railroad Club
  • Find out about the new home of the Museum of the American Railroad and talk with their staff
  • Visit the Texas Rail Advocates area and find out what they are doing to promote better passenger and freight rail service
  • Learn how to stay safe around trains and railroad crossings from Operation Lifesaver volunteers
  • Take the A-Train? Find out with information about the Denton County Transportation Authority at the TRE table.
  • The North Central Texas Council of Governments will have handouts about the future vision for passenger rail in our region
  • Talk to the North Texas Historical Transportation representatives about preserving our heritage
  • The National Association of Railroad Passengers will have brochures and information about national passenger rail services
  • Talk with the AMTRAK agents and find out where you can take a train in Texas and across the U.S.
  • Have fun with the balloon maker, face painter, enjoy carnival games, and listen to DJ Burn supplying the musical entertainment
  • Park your car and ride the Trinity Railway Express to the Fort Worth ITC for this event
