Denton County Transportation Authority, operator of the regional A-Train service between Denton and Carrollton in the I-35 corridor, is looking ahead to expand service.

The agency is planning a two-mile extension from its southern terminus at the Trinity Mills station in North Carrollton to meet up with future service on the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) new Silver Line, which opens later this year with a stop in downtown Carrollton.

According to DCTA, "the future connection to the DART Silver Line in Carrollton will provide access to the DFW Airport. This connection will help local riders save time and money by eliminating costly parking fees, expensive vehicle maintenance, and the stress of navigating airport traffic."

Additional future improvements include increased train speeds, reducing travel times, and more frequent service, giving riders greater flexibility in their schedules.

"The future of transit in Denton County is looking brighter than ever. We are looking forward to transformative enhancements to the A-train that will create lasting benefits for our riders and our region", according to a DCTA statement.

DCTA's A-Train currently operates on a 21-mile corridor that parallels Interstate 35 between Carrollton, in Dallas County and Denton, in Denton County.

There is presently a trifecta circuitous route for riders on the A-Train going to DFW International Airport. Travelers between DCTA's A-Train must now board two different DART services,  a Green Line and Orange Line train in Dallas to access DFW Airport.

Although no date has been announced for the A-Train extension to the downtown Carrollton station, where it will meet the DART Silver Line trains, plans will progress forward after he start of Silver Line service for the direct connection.

Other planned improvements include increasing the speed on the A-Train's route as well as adding track and signal capacity so that trains could run on a 15-minute headway in peak periods.

The A-Train presently operates with 30-minute headways from 6:00am to 9:00pm Monday through Friday and hourly service from 8:00am to 10:00pm on Saturdays.

This is occurring as Denton County's population passed the 1 million mark in 2023 and remains on a high growth curve.

In the meantime, the downtown Lewisville station is getting a $40 million makeover with a transit-oriented development district that will include new DCTA headquarters nearby the platform.

Plans are being developed by the city of Lewisville, DCTA and Dallas Area Rapid Transit. A Federal Transit Administration grant of around $8 million will offset the remaining projected amount which would include development partners and DCTA.
